So my 85 4Runner has never ever been known for it's immense power, rather for holding cars up on mountain passes since 1985. And since I moved to Utah I have found that most of the interstate speed limits are 80!

Today I got the old 22re to shatter that limit with a searing 82ish mph!!! It took a long hill and lots of gas, but I did it. And I feel proud. Mostly because this confirms my belief that I will never never ever get a speeding ticket on the interstate!

Was it as terrifying as taking a 1980 Toyota 3/4 ton Pickup with the 22r and a 4 speed up to 65MPH? That is code brown material right there.

Congrats! I drove across the country in a '98 4Runner, and it definitely seemed like the only times I broke 80 west of Denver were downhill.

I've hit 91 in my 2nd gen. It was one of the most terrifying things I've ever done.

When I had my '92 Beretta with the mighty 2.2 OHV four-cylinder and three-speed automatic (my first car), I got pulled over for going 71 in a 55. I personally felt I should've gotten a congratulations for getting the car past 70. The state trooper didn't offer me one, though.

The removable fiberglass top 4Runner was awesome, what came after was regrettable. Be proud, that's in great shape (so many end up beat). And, the engine/power issue can be addressed. Former 22R owner, current self-made 22RET owner.

80 mph speed limits mean you can go stupid fast. I cruise at least 75 in the 65s here and always get passed. Also, welcome to utah! Where abouts?

Do you fear death? Cause if you did, you wouldn't have tried that haha. I haven't driven a 2nd gen, but I was getting pretty rattly at 80.

Sir, you have piqued my interest there. Well played.

I love the truck though, don't even care about the power.

It felt like being inside my grandmothers house as an F5 tornado went over. Everything was shaking violently and it was loud. But I wasn't actually trying to do 91... the second time. The second time I was 13 hours into a 17 hour drive and I was going up hill fully loaded(I was moving, so I had about 1000lbs worth of shit in there), so I had to floor it to get up, well I never let off until I looked down and I was doing 91. 2nd gens were a bit more refined than the first gens, but this one has been thoroughly abused and played with, so no refinement left. The previous weekend I had pulled out 3 half-ton and up trucks out of the mud after I had been grill deep crossing a stream. To say it has taken care of me when it shouldn't have, would be an understatement.

Probably right, but I cant ride on the sidewalk over 6mph for more than 1 block, its illegal. Its actually probably safer for me to go faster than the cars around me, considering I have to cross the median to get home and have to be in the left lane. Its pretty scary using a left turn lane on a bike. I wanna make sure Im Going a safe speed in relation traffic.

Agreed, you don't really drive pre-Taco Toyota trucks for speed. I rebuilt mine as a 22RET as a matter of economy and "while you're at it". It had reached a point at about 200,000 miles of rebuild or replace, needing a carb rebuild, all new exhaust, and rings plus a repaint. I looked at the cost of a new truck (holy hell...) versus covering to EFI, turbo, and bodywork. I could rebuild/modify that truck 3 times for the cost of a new one. Fun, too.

Awesome!! Did you go with a factory turbo setup or more of a 22re+t?

Kinja'd!!! BoulderZ > The Magic Rev Matching 4Runner
10/25/2014 at 22:28

Kinja'd!!!0

Kind of 22R+E+T. The intake manifold is stock 22RE, the throttle body is stock 22RE, but many of the vac and coolant portals blocked. The injectors are stock 22RE, but the pump is Walbro, the brains are SDS, the exhaust manifold and downpipes are LC Engineering, the turbo is Garrett T3/T4 hybrid with an adjustable boost system mostly from Turbonetics. I also went MLS head gasket with ARP head studs and rod bolts. I haven't added an intercooler, but thinking I should. The boost is fairly low right now, about 10 PSI, and I have the tune about where I want it (with the exception of getting start enrichment long enough, annoyingly). It felt very quick with 225/75/14 tires, but when I went to 29" BFG TA/KO's on new 15" wheels (adding a LSD while I was at it), it is noticeably slower from a dead stop. I haven't decided what, if anything, I want to do about that. All in all, I'm very happy with how the build came out, and it was fun to do. There's still some work to do. I have a tach I'd like to wire in (kept the base stock instrument cluster and added A-pillar gauges), I need to replace the stereo (doesn't work), I need to fabricate new bumpers (would like a rear hitch and a winch up front), etc. Projects are never done, I suppose.

Idaho raised the site speed limits on parts of the interstate to 80 mph in july, and yeaterday was the the first day i have ever driven on one sincemthr speed limit went up, there is a damn awful lot of wind noise at 80 mph, it doesn't help that the interstate was concrete here, so that only makes it louder.
